ABSTRACT:
The current dissertation paper deals with Odysseus Elytis poetic work called "Axion Esti", which was set to music by Mikis Theodorakis during 1960s. The main reason for choosing this topic was due to a performance of "Axion Esti" by Greek and Austrian musicians I attended in Austria. This specific performance moved me while I tried to grasp the meaning of the lyrics through its music. At that moment I decided to study further the lyrics and understand the reasons why Mikis Theodorakis chose to introduce in his work the bizarre element of metasymphonic music. A type of music, that pairs European music with Greek folk music. I would therefore, like to stress how important and crucial the process of dissertation has been for me, since I had the chance to study in depth bibliography concerning "Axion Esti", Mikis Theodorakis and the new terms he introduced in Greek music as well as the Greek post war history.
