Bach cellosuites – a brief history: a consideration with special attention on the different elements used in the preludes of the first and the fifth suite application/pdf ABSTRACT: In this work, I will give a brief overview of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cello Suites. The journey will begin with a short explanation of the terms Suite and Prelude, since I believe that the reader should be informed about the roots of the Suite like a musical form. After this part comes the history of the Six Cello Suites, more specific when and where were they written, followed by short presentation of the existing manuscripts of the Suites. The most important rule in the bow technique from the Baroque epoch is the “down-stroke bow rule”, on which I also researched inspired by the wonderful lecture “Der sprechende Bogen” by Univ. Prof.Mag.M.A. Elisabeth Wiesbauer. One of the reasons why the compositions from Bach are so majestic, is the way he uses the composing technique counterpoint. Since Bach used this composing technique to write all of the Six Cello Suites, people tend to say that they sound quite similar. My point here is to show that they are indeed different on very other levels, despite the similarities that come from the composing technique itself. Through the analytical overview of the Preludes from the First and the Fifth Suite, the reader can understand and spot the differentials.
