<description descriptionType="Other">ABSTRACT:
Up until the first quarter of the 19th century, as being under the rule of Ottoman Empire
for over four centuries, national folklore music in the Balkan Peninsula had very little to almost
no conditions to develop, and music as such was not within the primary interests. The trumpet
at the time had only military use and was far from becoming a popular instrument, but that had
all changed fairly quickly. Usually, it is very difficult to establish the beginning of a certain
genre of music or trend in the society, because it all changes slowly and gradually with many
small changes. That is however not the case with the beginning of brass culture in Serbia. From
the time under the Turkish there was not brass culture in a way of orchestrated compositions of
any kind. With the Knjaževsko-Serbska banda orchestra we have a sudden beginning of
development of brass culture on the Serbian soil. The paths of the development of music in
Serbia, as well as the development of the trumpet as an instrument, can be traced back to the
establishment of the Knjaževsko-Serbska banda orchestra, headed by the conductor and
orchestra leader Josif Šlesinger. However, if we talk about brass culture in Serbia, it would be
impossible not to mention brass festival in Guca. Because of fast development of musical brass
culture, we will give a brief overview to the modern times and where the significance of brass
bends stands today.
