This thesis investigates the functions, perception, and usage of nudity in contemporary dance performances through the lens of feminist theories. It examines how nudity is employed by choreographers and perceived by audience and seeks to understand its role in challenging societal norms. The research focuses on two case studies: More than naked by Doris Uhlich and Anima Ardens by Thierry Smits. Utilizing theories such as gender performativity, the male gaze, intersectionality and body politics, the analysis demonstrates that these two case studies use the nudity as a tool of bodily reclamation, empowerment and resistance against social norms and beauty standards. The study emphasizes the potential of contemporary dance to promote more representative and balanced representation of the human body, contributing to the debates on body politics and representation in society and art.
