ABSTRACT:
The discovery of Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin was almost a century after they were composed. The interpreters of the 19th Century heavily misunderstood the pieces as studies or as solo violin pieces with a lost accompaniment. Advancements in the 20th
Century research in early music and newly introduced technologies as well as sources have changed the interpretation of the cycle dramatically. This paper aims to explore the differences between the editions of Bach’s three Sonatas and three Partitas for solo violin,
by two of the most important pedagogues of the 20th Century: Carl Flesch and Max Rostal. Their schools and literature will be examined to contextualise their editorial choices. Their professional and personal relationship as mentor-apprentice is also one of the aspects why it is interesting to analyse their opposing views. How much change can we see in Rostal’s approach after his professor, Flesch? What can be the reasons for these differences? Have the external advancements affect their decision-making?
