ABSTRACT:
This thesis is about the development of the flute in the 18th century and the
innovations that the new flute brought to the repertoire, in particular in the music of
Debussy.
Thanks to the new model of flute invented by Theobald Böhm, there were a lot of
changes for the flute in terms of sound, intonation, technique and nuances.
Debussy was one of the first composer who understood the possibilities of the new
flute in his music. His music is considered like the impressionism in art: full of images, feelings, senses
and colours. It was in this context that Debussy decided to use the flute as a protagonist; the new
flute was able to be part of this world full of nuances, thanks to the new kind of sound
it had. We will therefore analyse two pieces by the composer, in which the flute emerges
and explores all its characteristics: Syrinx for solo flute and Prelude à l’après-midi
d’un faune. Both pieces have one thing in common: they come from a mythological environment.
Mythology was widely used as a subject for pieces, operas and novels precisely
because it creates feelings that help people to escape from reality.
The sound of the flute helped to create this kind of atmosphere and made the
impressionist music of the period even more fascinating.
