ABSTRACT: This thesis explores the interpretative and technical challenges in learning Antonio José’s Sonata para guitarra. Composed on a piano, José’s limited knowledge of guitar led to a partly unplayable manuscript. As with much guitar repertoire, creating an edition with clear fingerings and adapted material was necessary. However, due to José’s life circumstances, the source material was difficult to locate. The initial edition, thought to be the manuscript, was merely a sketch with crossed-out sections and unclear notes. A later revised edition, based on the actual manuscript, addressed these issues and adhered closely to the original material. This edition was technically more challenging, leading many guitarists to blend elements from both editions for balance. I extensively analysed and compared the different possibilities in the editions, discovering new ones. My research included José’s life, other works, artistic influences, contemporaries, and the music style of his period. Additionally, I studied the history of arranging and transcribing to understand decisions in the available editions better. I will compare my interpretative and technical solutions with those in the editions and the manuscript. I will analyse the differences from both technical and musical perspectives to create a version that I believe aligns closely with José’s intentions.
