ABSTRACT: This thesis explores female violinists' historical and contemporary status, focusing on their participation in the Queen Elisabeth Violin Competition (QEC). The study provides a historical overview of female violinists, beginning from the 17th century and highlighting the progression of women overcoming societal and gender-related challenges to enter the classical music scene. It analyzes the roles of female violinists in international competitions, especially their performances and achievements at the QEC. The paper investigates the gender disparities in participation and success at the competition, providing statistical analysis on the increasing representation of female violinists and their performance trends. Special attention is given to prizewinning female violinists of Asian descent, examining their influence on the competition and the broader classical music world. Through case studies of prominent female violinists, this thesis evaluates the social, technical, and psychological challenges female musicians face in a historically male-dominated field. The findings show that while women have made significant strides in classical music, they still face genderspecific challenges that impact their careers.
