ABSTRACT:
“A fluid perspective on dance training” investigates the emergence of alternative methodologies in formal dance training today, through the perspective of dance education in academic environments but also in relation to the state of contemporary dance practices in the professional area. The point of initiation is based on linking infant development with acquiring sensorimotor skills involved in learning dance, and builds further observing the interrelatedness between formal and somatic aspects in dance practice. Anthropological, philosophical and historical grounds are joined by alternative views on movement education and repatterining, offering methodological bases for updating and improving formal dance trainings. In a quest aimed at inviting and supporting students to participate in building their own distinct personalities as artists and performers, this thesis is placing emphasis on the specificity of each person when approaching and learning dance, and attempts to empower dance practitioners in building their own tools of expression.
