ABSTRACT: In this diploma you will find an introduction of Paul Creston’s work and life, but with more emphasis on his Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Piano (or Band). This should help the performer to better understand the composer and the peace all together. It tells the important details about rhythmical and melodical specialties, that Creston used by writing of the peace. I decided to make an analyze of this Concerto, because I played it on my final exam and I really like Creston as a composer. For me he is one of the best composers that I played thill now, because of his dance-like motives and beautiful melodical lines. I wanted to learn some new things about his life and work, that could help me to better understand him and his Concerto. I started my work by researching Paul Creston’s personal life, his work and the history of how he wrote the Concerto, so that I could better understand the environment and time in which he wrote the Concerto. That helps by understanding how Paul Creston even came to be writing this Concerto. This is followed by the structural analyze of the Concerto and finalized by explaining the rhythmical specialties which are found in the piece and for which he is really well known to play around with, to create shifting in “feel” of the rhythm.
