ABSTRACT:
Ignaz Moscheles' etudes were amongst the earliest piano etudes since the birth of the form as a pedagogical genre composed with the intent of focusing on musical substance whilst addressing technical concerns; they were some of the first examples of the later extensively-cultivated concert etudes,1 heralding the rise of the etude as a performance work. They generally resemble character pieces, often possessing programmatic features and utilize compositional techniques such as variations for musical diversity, contrasting them to the mass of practice etudes prioritising finger technique. The features of his etudes will be described in Chapter Three. The intent of this paper is to serve foremost as an exposition of the early development of the piano etude and an outline of Moscheles' contributions to the genre.
The first chapter discusses Moscheles' contributions as a leading musical figure of his time. The early history of the piano etude and the environment in which it grew to be established as a utilitarian pedagogical form and later, a performance work, as well as a partly subjective, non-exhaustive overview of the types of etudes will be discussed in the second chapter, referencing to Stephen Paul Weber's dissertation „Principles of Organization in Piano Etudes: An Analytical Study with Application through Original Compositions (1993).” A catalogue and a more detailed overview of Moscheles' own contributions to the genre along with a discussion of three selected etudes will be presented in the second half of the paper.
